Managing Unconscious Bias

Dates: March 10, 2020

Location: Cumming - City Hall 433

As organizations seek to create a fair and respectful workplace, unconscious bias training has become an important tool in promoting inclusivity. Unconscious bias occurs when judgements are made and opinions are formed about others, either favorably or unfavorably, without conscious thought. Many researchers suggest that these kinds of opinions begin to form in childhood and continue developing into adulthood through institutional, media, and peer group influence. If we are not careful to realize their existence as well as their impact, employee morale, productivity, and retention can be negatively affected. In addition, organizations may be less likely to recruit a richly diverse workforce that is crucial for an organization’s financial success and social responsibility.

In this workshop you will:

-Define unconscious bias and discuss examples of how they manifest in the workplace
-Learn how unconscious bias can affect who gets hired, promoted and developed
-Learn steps that can be taken to uncover unconscious biases and minimize the impact to overall productivity

(Leadership and Supervision Master Certificate elective course)
